SINGLE TIER PUMPKIN + PLANT HANGER
- LET'S BEGIN! -

Remove your Single Tier Project S-Hook w/ Project Cord Attached (do not untie the attached alternate colored cord at the top yet) + hang this S-Hook onto your work station​

DO NOT UN-TIE THE ALTERNATE COLORED TIE THAT HOLDS THE PROJECTS CORD TO YOUR S-HOOK - you will be informed when this tie should be removed later on in the project!

The tie at the top is designed to assist you while weaving your Hanging Arch + to ensure that the lengths of the cords are correct!

If for some reason the tie becomes untied at this time, match the colored tape lengths to each other, + match the remaining 8 shorter cord lengths to each other

Suggested Work Stations: Ceiling Hook, Curtain Rod, Shower Rod, Over-a-Door, Clothing Rack - anything you can hang an S-hook on!

MAKING A HANGING ARCH USING
THE MULTI-FILLER SQUARE KNOT VARIATION
OVERVIEW
-
A Hanging Arch is the top of a plant hanger that you weave yourself, rather than using hoops, hardware, rings, etc. - you create the hanging arch top yourself!
-
This is a great skill to have because it can withstand a lot of weight hanging from it! ​

A Multi-Filler Square Knot Variation is a variation of the classic Square Knot - the difference being that you use multiple cords as the Filler Cords, while still only utilizing 2 cords as the Working Cords
-
This Multi-Filler Square Knot Variation is the knot that you will use to create your Hanging Arch - don't worry, I'll show you how!

KNOT INSTRUCTION
MULTI-FILLER SQUARE KNOT VARIATION
Watch the video, then follow up with the step-by-step written + photo instruction as needed!
Don't worry about applying this knot until you get to the "Application" Section!
WRITTEN+ PHOTO GUIDANCE:

Always start with your Left Working Cord

With the Left Working Cord, make an "L" shape - ensuring that the "L" is in front of the multiple filler cords but behind the working cord on the Right
-
Take the Right working cord (the one you did NOT make the "L" with), + bring that cord behind the multiple filler cords - pinch all center cords with your thumb (the multiple filler cords + the Right working cord that you are currently moving)

Bring that Right working cord through the back of the loop on the left, pulling it over towards the left while keeping your thumb on the center cords to keep the knot steady as you tie
-
Tighten this tie by pulling down on the multiple filler cords while simultaneously pushing the 2 working cords up + out, thus completing 1/2 of the Multi-Filler Square Knot!

To complete your Square Knot, you will repeat the same steps but this time starting on the RIGHT side - with the Right working cord, make a backwards "L" - ensuring that this backwards "L" is in front of the multiple filler cords but behind the Left working cord

Take the Left working cord (the one you did NOT make the "L" with), + bring that cord behind the multiple filler cords working cords, pinch those cords with your thumb (the multiple filler cords+ the Left working cord that you are currently moving)

Bring that Left working cord through the back of the loop on the Right, pulling it over towards the Right while keeping your thumb on the center cords to keep the knot steady as you tie

Tighten this 1/2 of the Square Knot by pulling down on the multiple filler cords while simultaneously pushing the 2 working cords up + out, thus completing one entire Square Knot!

Important Tip: Remember to tie out + up rather than towards your self - this will prevent the knot from folding into itself

Let's utilize that knot that we just learned to create the Hanging Arch on your Project!​

WRITTEN+ PHOTO GUIDANCE:
- FIRST -​

Identify the two halves of your project cords that hang on each side side of the S-Hook​​
-
Ensure that the two halves have not crossed underneath the S-Hook - there will be 10 hanging cords for each half of the S-Hook
-
You will only be weaving the half-set of cords that are closest to you
​

If it feels helpful, you can hang the other cords that you are not working with to the side so that you can focus on just the cords that you are weaving
-
This isn't a necessary step, but it can be helpful when you're just starting out!

Now, locate the two cords in those 10 cords that you are utilizing that have matching colored tape on them
​

These pieces of cord have matching colored tape because they are the longest pieces of project cord!
-
BONUS:
-
The reason that 2 cords need to be longer is to account for the shrinking that occurs while weaving multi-filler cord knots - this shrinking of the cord is substantial because the knot is quite thicker than a standard knot!
-
The thickness of this knot is great for the durability of a Hanging Arch but you want to make sure to account for this substantial shrinking of cord when planning these types of projects!

I added 4' to (2) pieces of cord for this project to account for this
-

Now, ensure that these two longest pieces of cord are situated on the leftmost + rightmost position of your active cords - these will be your WORKING CORDS
-
If these cords need to be adjusted at all to ensure that they are on the leftmost + rightmost positions, do so by delicately moving them left or right - do not untie the knot at the top or pull on them
-

Now, weave a (8) Multi Filler Cord (MFC) Square Knot Sinnet - aka - (8) MFC Square Knots Stacked right on top of each other - REMEMBER - you are only weaving 1/2 of the cords for this knot - go back + check out the photos describing this + see this in the video as well - very important:)

Begin this weave right up to the S-Hook - here's a video to guide you!

Now, untie the colored string that is connecting all of your project cord to your S-Hook (it's time!!)

Fold your (8) Knot Sinnet in half like a Horseshoe, + settle the middle point of this onto your S-Hook - here is a video to help you visualize!

What you'll do now is you'll apply this technique of the Multi-Filler Square Knot you've learned to finish off your Hanging Arch

To do this, locate the left front-most + right front-most cords of one side of your Horseshoe - one will have a Pink Tape on the end + one will have a Yellow Tape on the end
​

These two pieces will become the Working Cords for your final (3) Knots to finish off your Hanging Arch - here's a video + photos to help you visualize!

CREATING 5 SECTIONS FOR PUMPKIN + PLANT HOLDER

MAKING A 5 SECTION BASKET THAT WILL HOLD A PUMPKIN OR A PLANT

TO MAKE A SQUARE KNOT

Always start with your left working cord

With the left working cord, make an "L" shape - ensuring that the "L" is in front of the two filler cords but behind the working cord on the Right

Take the Right working cord (the one you did NOT make the "L" with), + bring that cord behind the middle two filler cords, pinch those 3 cords with your thumb (the 2 filler cords + the Right working cord that you are currently moving)

Choose (4) Cords to work with for your 1st Section

Ensure that these cords are not twisted + are laying nicely next to each other, rather than any of them being behind or otherwise
-
If it feels helpful, set the cords that you are not working with aside
-
Drop down 9" from the bottom of your Hanging Arch - this is where you will begin to make your 1st of 5 Square Knot Sinnets! Here are some photos + a video to help you along your way!

Continue working your way around your piece, 4 cords at a time, making (5) total (9) Square Knot Sinnets - if you need help deciding which (4) cords to use next, check out this video to guide you! ​

Ensure that each time you begin weaving a new (4) cord section that they are not twisted up top + that they are situated one-next-to-the-other (rather than behind/in front of each other)​ - watch the second video for some extra guidance regarding!

Helpful Hint: While you are working around your piece, don't be afraid to switch your S-Hook around so that your active cords are facing towards you - here's a video to demo what I mean:

Once you have completed all (5) of your Sections, you're ready to join them together at the bottom, woohoo! ​

For this particular project, you will be dropping down 1.5" from the bottom of your Square Knot Sinnet to fit a mini pumpkin a/o a small potted plant - BUT FIRST - review this information:

You will be weaving the bottom of your basket by creating a Multi-Filler Square Knot
-
You will be choosing (2) working cords to weave with, the rest will become filler cords!
-
You will be weaving (3) Multi-Filler Square Knots!
-
The (2) working cords that you choose will need to be the longest cord from the front + the longest cord from the back, here is a video to help you visualize what this means! ​

BONUS: Why is it important to maximize cord length?
-
​This is a great sustainability practice! Rather than cutting all cords to have extra length, you can take an extra bit of time to locate the longest pieces in your projects (these will be the cords that haven't been woven as much therefore they haven't shrunk in length!).
-
This saves you on cord by reducing waste, + can help develop your skills of working with the fiber to maximize its use rather than cutting too much "just in case" or running out of length mid-project!
-
This project has been designed to have some cords shrink less so that we can make these big thick beautiful knots without worrying about shrinking!
-
If you are working on macrame in the future + a piece has shrunk too much, see if you can find a piece that still has length + try to incorporate that in!

NOW - Once you have identified the (2) longest pieces you will use for your Working Cords, drop down 1.5" from the BOTTOM of your (9) Square Knot Sinnets + weave (3) Multi-Filler Square Knots

Make sure that all of your filler cords are pulled down + taut before you weave!

Using (2) longest pieces as your Working Cords, weave all project cords into a (3) Multi-Filler Square Knot Sinnet

Ensure that these all begin + end at the same points

Be sure to use the longest pieces of cord on opposing sides as your Working Cords
